Logements N
Bernay, Normandie, France
In the heart of Bernay’s historic center, DODA.A is transforming a set of deteriorated buildings into collective housing, balancing heritage with contemporary use.
The project restores identity and coherence to a heterogeneous volume shaped by successive, low-quality interventions. The massive, characterless façade from the 1970s has been completely redesigned with vertical wooden cladding.
This simple, contemporary treatment enhances the whole while engaging in dialogue with the late-19th-century building.
On the street side, the intervention highlights the existing heritage: the adjoining brick-and-stone townhouse regains its stature through meticulous restoration, emphasized by redesigned metal railings and refined joinery. The result is a balanced conversation between old and new, sober yet deliberate.
The apartments benefit from balconies and terraces overlooking the city, providing light and comfort.
This project reflects the agency’s commitment to requalifying existing structures by respecting architectural heritage while addressing contemporary needs for collective housing and flexible workspaces.
