In a quiet alley in Paris’s 15th arrondissement, at the back of a courtyard, stood a modest 19th-century one-story house composed of a main building and a return wing along the side boundary wall. DODA.A’s project adds a full upper floor, inserts a new three-level volume, and renovates the existing structures.
The extension and rooftop addition are clad in white steel panels, bringing light into the courtyard and reflecting it off their surface. The new design incorporates large openings, including a two-story vertical window that enhances the classic facade of the original house. The low-rise annex buildings, repainted white, are converted into two rental studios.
Inside, the ground floor of the main house features a bedroom and bathroom, while the basement includes a spacious bathroom and laundry room.
The first floor holds two ensuite bedrooms spread across the original house and the extension. The second floor hosts a 35 m2 living room with a fireplace and a dining area with a double-height ceiling. The third floor, set as a mezzanine above the dining room, houses a dine-in kitchen with two large glass doors opening onto a 20 m2 terrace.
This project is a prime example of transforming a typically complex Parisian plot, leveraging vertical space to bring in natural light and reconfiguring the interior for improved comfort and functionality.
