Villa MY
Dinard, Bretagne, France
Located in Dinard, this 1970s architect-designed villa was originally conceived to showcase breathtaking views over the Bay of Le Prieuré and the fortified city of Saint-Malo. The project involves a full renovation that enhances the original architectural features, optimizes the floor plan, and adds new ensuite bedrooms.
The original structure was organized around intersecting axes aligned with sea views. Three distinct volumes defined the house: one aligned along the coastal path housing the living areas and an indoor pool; a central volume perpendicular to the sea; and a third, set at the entrance of the plot, dedicated to bedrooms.
The project builds on this axial concept, extending the rear volume to create a spacious living area with an open kitchen and dining room on the ground floor, a new level-access terrace, a garden-level suite with sauna and private terrace, and three comfortable upstairs bedrooms. Upper-floor windows are enlarged and enhanced with dormers to frame new views of the sea and Saint-Malo.
Inside, the home’s modernist spirit is preserved, blending raw materials like wood and concrete with fabric accents and mirrors that reflect the changing sea and highlight the building’s geometry.
From the street, the villa retains its clean 1970s lines, with a third triangular dormer added to the roof. The original granite cladding is preserved and complemented by timber for the extension. On the sea-facing side, the facade combines plywood and raw concrete.
The transparency envisioned in the original design is accentuated through new openings and terraces. The former garage ramp has been converted into stairs, creating a new garden-level entrance. The indoor pool is reconnected to the terrace, giving it a refreshed outdoor extension.
